Gokhale is an Indian surname typically found in the western state of Maharashtra〔() Global diversity: winning customers and engaging employees within world markets By Ernest Gundling, Anita Zanchettin, Aperian Global (Firm)〕 amongst Marathi Brahmins.〔Studies in Indian cultural history, Volume 3, 1969〕 The supposed origin of the Gokhale clan was in the small coastal town of Velneshwar about 10 km from Guhagar and 50 km from Chiplun in the Konkan region. The etymology of the word is accepted to be from Marathi ''gokhla'', meaning "round window", originally from Sanskrit ''gav-ākşa'', literally "cow-eye".
